Toddler Drawstring Skirt with Pockets

Happy Spring! Need a weekend project? Here is a quick tutorial to keep your little one cool and breezy!

For a 12″ skirt, cut fabric 15″ x 42″ (or at least double the waist size). Fold down 1/4″ from cut line and iron. Fold down again, 1/2″ and iron. Fold skirt in half, wrong sides facing and mark with a water soluble pen where you would like the drawstring openings. Leave at least one inch between openings.

Set up button hole foot on sewing machine. Make sure that holes will be wide enough for your drawstring. Pull down button hole guide from your machine (or follow your individual sewing machine’s User Guide). Unfold folds and place needle on bottom portion of button hole markings and sew button holes. After sewn, secure ends of button holes with a pin and   cut open hole with seam ripper.

Fold bottom hem 1″ and iron. Secure hem using a blind stitch.

Fold right sides together (with top skirt unfolded) and sew with a 1/2″ seam allowance. Fold down top skirt (1/4″ and then 1/2″) and top stitch along edge.

For pockets: Cut 2 swatches of fabric in desired size of pockets. Be sure to include a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Fold 1/4″ and iron down edges. Top stitch top of pocket. Pin pocket to skirt and edge stitch along sides and bottom of pocket. Be sure to reinforce top edges of pockets (see pictures below).

Use safety pin to thread ribbon through button holes for drawstring.

Tie bow & wear! Adorable!!
