Swing Dress Tutorial

It’s hard to get a little wiggle worm to hold still for a picture! Here’s a free tutorial on our summer swing dress!! Just in time for warmer weather! Be sure to share pictures! Xx

Dress (or Tunic) starts out similar to previous skirt tutorial. Measure length of dress desired on your little model. Add 1 1/2″ to length to account for finished hem and elastic top. For example, I cut 15″ of fabric for a 13 1/2″ dress. The dress above is 38″ wide. You can add or subtract for more or less “swing” to your dress.

Start by folding over top 1/4″ and then again by 1/2″ ironing each fold. Repeat on bottom of dress. Unfold and secure right sides together by stitching lengthwise with a 1/4″ seam allowance. Press open seam.

Re-fold top of dress and stitch down bottom edge of fold, leaving 1″ open for inserting elastic. Insert elastic. I use the safety pin method! Pull elastic to desired size and stitch together, trim excess. Sew close 1″ opening.

To make straps; cut 2 1/2″ strips by 42″ (width of fabric) fold sides in to middle, then fold again, iron. Edge stitch both sides. Cut into 4 equal pieces. Attach to dress and finish ends of straps. I folded the ends down twice and hand stitched them to secure, since it was too thick to sew with my machine.

To make ruffle; Cut 4″ strip by 42″ (width of fabric), sew right sides together with a 1/4″ seam allowance. Press open seam allowance. Flip to right side. Attach Ruffle Foot (video tutorial coming soon!) and set stitch to longest length. Baste stitch with Ruffle Foot.  Pin to dress and stitch with normal stitch length. Be careful not to stitch over baste stitch or inserted elastic. Pull out baste stitch so one stitch line remains on ruffle and dress.

Hem; attach Blind Hem Foot on your sewing machine. Fold ironed folds to right side and insert into foot (see photo below). Blind stitch.

Pocket; cut desired size of pocket adding 1/4″ seam allowance. Sew down top of pocket, then iron down 1/4″ seam allowance on sides and bottom. Edge stitch to dress in desired location. Sampled dress has a 4″x4″ pocket. Make sure to reinforce top side edges of pocket.

Voila! Swing dress is complete! So chic!! Enjoy!  Xx
